How a Day at Cayo Icacos Actually Works
Four steps, one honest line about the weather, and the thing every listing buries: which cay you actually land on.
Pick the Boat by the Day You Want
The 80-seat catamaran sails from Puerto del Rey at the south end of Fajardo with a BBQ lunch and a bar; the water taxi leaves from Las Croabas at the north end and simply drops you on the sand. They are nine kilometres apart. Book the boat, then plan the drive - not the other way round.
Be at the Dock Early, Then Sail Past El Yunque
Check-in is 45 minutes before departure for East Island and Sail Getaway and an hour for Sea Ventures and Al Este; late arrivals are no-shows. The sail out runs under the El Yunque ridge and past the Fajardo lighthouse - 45 to 50 minutes on the catamaran, fifteen to twenty on the water taxi.
Beach, Lunch, Reef - or Reef, Then Beach
The catamaran anchors off the cay for beach time, serves lunch on board, then moves onto the reef for an hour or two of snorkelling. The snorkel-first boats reverse that. There are no docks: you step off into waist-deep water, so wear what can get wet.
Know Which Cay You Actually Land On
The biggest operator's own listing says the captain 'will sometimes head to Cayo Lobo or Palominos if the conditions are better for the day', and the snorkel cruise's old web address still says 'Icacos or Vieques', though Icacos is its named destination. A winter swell can also cancel the snorkel stop and keep the beach. Every page here says which boats promise Icacos and which do not.

The Catamaran Day, the Fast Boat, and the Water Taxi
Three ways to spend a day at Cayo Icacos, with what each listing actually includes - and the line that matters most: the catamaran's own listing says the captain may land you on Lobos or Palomino instead if the sea is better there.

Before You Book
Which Boat to Icacos, and What the Listings Don't Say First
Four docks nine kilometres apart, three kinds of boat, and a conditionality clause that only two operators state out loud.
Start with the fact that decides the booking, because it is in the fine print of the most popular boat on this coast.
East Island’s own listing says the captain “will sometimes head to Cayo Lobo or Palominos if the conditions are better for the day.” Salty Dog’s own page goes further: “the trip’s 2 destinations will be determined by our captain on the day - Icacos, Palomino and/or Cayo Lobos.” Nobody is hiding anything: the cays sit on an exposed shelf and a winter swell makes one anchorage better than another. But if your day is about Icacos rather than a cay, the only boats that go nowhere else are the water taxis; Snorkeling Puerto Rico, Al Este (sold on the platform as Tena Rock) and Castillo name Icacos and add that the route may change with the weather, and Sail Getaway’s own site says destinations are at the captain’s discretion. The comparison below says which is which.
The three kinds of boat
The big catamarans. East Island’s 80-passenger boat from Puerto del Rey “normally takes place at full capacity”; Tena Rock’s 50-foot Traveler takes 48 from Villa Marina. You get a shaded deck, a bar, lunch served aboard, and the day’s rhythm set for you - sail, beach, lunch, reef, sail. From $130 to $155, plus a $3 ‘DRNA fee’ the catamarans collect in cash at check-in - East Island’s own price is $135 plus 11.5% tax plus the $3, which is where the platform’s $155 comes from.
The power cats. Sail Getaway’s Runaway is a 41-foot boat built in 2022 that does the whole thing in four hours, morning or afternoon, for $135; its listing is the only one that says plainly there are no docks at the cay and you will step off into the water. Tena Rock’s 46-foot motorboat runs afternoons from Villa Marina for $115 with a cap of 40.
The water taxi. East Coast Water Taxi leaves from the Kayak Village pier at Las Croabas, crosses in fifteen minutes, drops you with umbrellas, a cooler and a mask, and comes back for you later. It is not a boat day; it is the cay on your own terms, for $95, and you bring your own lunch. icacos-island-water-taxi.com covers the water taxi in depth, including the docks and what to bring.

Four docks, not one
The boats do not share a dock, and the docks are not close. Puerto del Rey (East Island) is at the south end of Fajardo on Route 3; Villa Marina and Marina Puerto Chico (Tena Rock, Sea Ventures, Snorkeling Puerto Rico) are mid-town; the Kayak Village at Las Croabas (the water taxi) is at the northern tip. Puerto del Rey to Las Croabas is eight to nine kilometres by road; by sea the cay is 12 km from Puerto del Rey and 4 km from Las Croabas, which is why one crossing takes 45-50 minutes and the other 15. Every listing names its dock and its check-in - 45 minutes before for East Island and Sail Getaway, an hour for Sea Ventures and Al Este, 1:30 pm sharp for the Snorkeling Puerto Rico cruise - and every one of them calls a late arrival a no-show with no refund. The directions page has the four docks on a map.
What you give up on the cheaper boats
Beer, mostly. The $135 and $115 boats include soft drinks, juice and rum drinks but exclude beer; the catamaran day includes local beer. The water taxi’s cooler has beer but no lunch. Fins are on nobody’s list except as part of a “snorkel gear” line, and towels and sunscreen are on everyone’s exclusion list. Children: not under 4 on East Island, not under 2 on Sail Getaway, not under 3 on the water taxi, not under 5 on Tena Rock.
The weather clause
Every boat here cancels free up to 24 hours before, and every one of them reserves the right to cancel for weather with a full refund or a new date (checked October 2026). The subtler case is the day that runs but changes shape: a swell that moves the catamaran to Palomino, or a current that cancels the snorkel stop and keeps the beach - a Sea Ventures guest describes exactly that. Winter, roughly December to March, is when it happens; it is also when the water is clearest on the calm days. The snorkeling page covers the reef side of that trade.

What Guests Say
"It was beyond my expectations! The staff is amazing, the catamaran is super clean and organized. This Island is a dream! I promise you you’ll have the time of your life."

"it was amazin, the crew was very friendly and we had a great time. food was Ok but the trip was really enjoyable ."
"This was great! However, if you opt for transport please note they pick you up at 5:40am! I was staying in old San Juan and was picked up at 5:35am. So make sure you bring snacks for breakfast, or at the marina when you check in they have a little shop to buy basic stuff. They also served lunch on the boat! However it was served at 9:30, and i had jsut eaten at the marina so that was annoying. They do have some light snacks after like granola bars and chips, and water and drinks the whole time. The snorkeling was okay, didn’t see much. The island was breathtaking and soooo nice to swim in! Overall i did enjoy it, and the staff was exceptional!"

"Super fun, everything was accounted for. More than Sufficient Food, & drinks & safety. Both stops were beautiful. Icacos was unreal. Wish we saw some bigger critters but what we did see - was incredible."

"Fantastic trip. Highly recommend. Perfect for large families with smaller children."
"Amazing! The staff was friendly and very attentive."
"This was such a fun excursion!!! Food, drinks and workers were amazing! 10000/10 would recommend!"

Icacos Island Tours FAQ
The questions people type before booking a boat - answered in the first sentence, sourced from the operators' own listings in the ones after.
Yes - every boat on this page is a day trip, because nobody can stay on the cay. The full-day version is East Island's catamaran from Puerto del Rey (about 45 minutes out, beach, BBQ lunch aboard, an hour or two on the reef, back by late afternoon); the half-day version is Sail Getaway's four-hour Double Dip, morning or afternoon; the cheapest is the water taxi from Las Croabas, which drops you on the sand and collects you later. All of them cancel free up to 24 hours before (checked October 2026). The three are compared line by line above.
From about $95 to $195 a person, as of October 2026. The water taxi beach-day package is $95 (bring your own lunch); Sea Ventures' snorkel boat is $110 plus a $3 marine fee; Tena Rock's afternoon boat is $115; Snorkeling Puerto Rico's cruise is $117; Sail Getaway's Double Dip is $135; East Island's catamaran day is $155; Sail Getaway's luxury sail is $195. Private charters run to $875 for the boat. The catamarans add a $3 'DRNA fee' in cash at check-in; tips and hotel pickup are extra on every listing, and beer is excluded on several.
Only the water taxis go to Icacos and nowhere else; every catamaran reserves the right to land you on Lobos or Palomino instead. East Island's own listing says the captain 'will sometimes head to Cayo Lobo or Palominos if the conditions are better for the day'; Salty Dog's page says its two stops 'will be determined by our captain on the day - Icacos, Palomino and/or Cayo Lobos'; Sail Getaway's site says destinations are at the captain's discretion. That is honest - the cays sit on an exposed shelf - but if the cay itself is the point, the water taxi is the one boat that goes nowhere else, and in winter keep a plan B.
Four different Fajardo docks, about nine kilometres apart end to end. East Island sails from Puerto del Rey Marina on Route 3 at the south end of town (free parking inside the marina, check-in 45 minutes before); Tena Rock and Sea Ventures use Villa Marina and Snorkeling Puerto Rico uses Marina Puerto Chico, both mid-town (check-in an hour before); the water taxi leaves from the Kayak Village pier at Las Croabas at the northern tip - look for the blue boat. Every listing calls a late arrival a no-show. The docks are mapped here.
Fifteen to twenty minutes from Las Croabas by water taxi; 45 to 50 minutes from Puerto del Rey on the sailing catamaran. The difference is where the dock is: the cay is 4 km off Las Croabas, the closest point of the mainland, and 12 km from Puerto del Rey at the south end of Fajardo. Sail Getaway's and Tena Rock's boats from mid-town run somewhere between. The catamaran's sail is part of the day - it passes under the El Yunque ridge and the Fajardo lighthouse - rather than a transfer to endure.
On the catamaran and power-cat days, yes; on the water taxi, no. East Island serves a BBQ buffet with pina coladas and rum punch; Sail Getaway's Double Dip serves a cold buffet of cold cuts, cheeses and salads; the luxury sail serves a hot Puerto Rican buffet; Tena Rock serves sandwiches and fruit; Snorkeling Puerto Rico calls its meal a light lunch. The water taxi provides a cooler with water, soda and beer and tells you to bring your own food - there is nothing to buy on the cay.
Yes, with age floors that differ by boat. East Island's catamaran takes children from 4; Sail Getaway's Double Dip from 2 (it includes kids' floats); Tena Rock from 4 or 5 depending on the listing, with kids' snorkel gear included; the water taxi from 3; Snorkeling Puerto Rico from 6. Pregnant guests are excluded on several listings. Snorkeling Puerto Rico sets its bar's minimum age at 21 (Puerto Rico's legal drinking age is 18); the other listings do not say. Life jackets and flotation are listed on the Sail Getaway and Tena Rock boats.
Every operator cancels for weather with a full refund or a new date, and every listing cancels free up to 24 hours before (checked October 2026). The subtler case is the day that runs but changes: the catamaran may land on Lobos or Palomino instead, and a strong current can cancel the snorkel stop while the beach goes ahead - a Sea Ventures guest describes exactly that happening. Sail Getaway's trips run 'rain or shine'. Winter swells, roughly December to March, are when the shape of the day most often changes.
